This tour is designed if you are really interesting to explore the history; with ancient technology, ancient culture and traditions of srilanka as well as contemporary history of the world. Polonnaruwa is an ancient kingdom and still the ruins and monuments are conserved in a proper way to secure the evidence of our pride history for the next generation.

If you are a free independent traveller (FIT) who booked a hotel in Dambulla or Habarana area, we can pick you at the Airport to drop you to the hotel. But without just dropping at the hotel we can give this day tour on the way to drop you to the hotel.

Modern day Polonnaruwa is located about 228Km to northeast of Colombo. It’s said that sri Lankan aborigines used to live in Udumbara girl or Doomarakka Pbbatha a cave around this area. According to Mahawamsa (the great chronicle of Sinhalese) it was known as “Vijitha Grama” in 6th century BC. It also mansions the visit of princess Baddakachchana on her way to Anuradhapura. So, we know, the city has a long history.

Polonnaruwa was the second Kingdom in Sri Lanka from 11th Century to 13th Century. Polonnaruwa is declared a World heritage site by UNESCO in Srilanka in 1982 because of its ancient constructions

Alahana pirivena monastery complex had been a major reason for the consideration as a UNESCO world heritage site. Polonnaruwa is a show piece for ancient city planning. District of Polonnaruwa situated in the dry zone in North Central province. The city can be divided into two parts, the modern city and the ancient city. The polonnaruwa is a famous tourist destination because of its cultural, heritage, architectural, religious with ancient irrigation development

Our chauffer guide will pick you from the airport and will be headed to Dambulla. This tour is generally designed to start around 8.30 am from Polonnaruwa. We can do any adjustment depending on your schedule. Depending on the flight schedule we can guide you to plan this day tour. Talk to us.

In the middle of the tour our tour guide will arrange a good place to refresh yourself with good Refreshments.

70% of this tour will be based on walking in the ancient city. While walking our experienced chauffer guide lecturer will give you lot of information and share his experiences. 

The average length of this tour is 4 hours. Maximum 5 hours

You will be picked at the airport or at Colombo by a chauffeur guide, a suitable luxury vehicle will come to pick you.

After travelling 197 km from Airport through Ambepussa - Kurunegala highway you will be arrival to Polonnaruwa.

Pickup can be arranged from any airport or any place you want. At the end of the visit you will be dropped to your decided drop location.

  • When we go to Buddhist temples traditionally we remove our hats and shoes. Therefor you have to remove your hats and shoes before enter. You can use temple socks.
  • You have to walk under the hot sun. because Polonnaruwa is located in the dry zone of Srilanka.
  • Hot sun is the only reason that we are encouraging visitors to start this trip early in the morning.
  • Use mineral water bottle specially when we have a walk.
  • If you want to taste street foods, please talk to our guide first and get his recommendations.
